Welcome to Summer

The Memorial Day weekend. And my air conditioning is on the fritz. Total crap! I now need to get in touch with the company that installed it and figure out how I can get them to come out here after working hours, since it's a problem for me to be out of the office. And that just blows. But it's been 88 degrees in the house, even with fans blowing and whenever there is a breeze I open the windows. It's so hot in here that I can't work. And that just blows. I was hoping that I'd get a lot more done this weekend but I just can't work when it's that hot.

But I have my interview tomorrow, so that's a positive step. I hope it goes well. I'm counting on it going well. I need to start moving forward.

I went to Eric's party on Saturday. It was pretty mellow. I don't know if that was because Bill wasn't there, or if we were just in a more mellow mood. I didn't even drink that much - only 5 beers. I just wasn't in the mood. I didn't even stay over there (even though it would have been much cooler). But it felt nice to have the weekend, and not be hung over.

I do wish I had one day where it was cool enough to work!

Blog Challenge with 5 Senses

LOVE:
the SIGHT of the entranceway to Disneyland or Disney World
the SMELL of fresh, buttered, hot popcorn
the TASTE of lasagna
the SOUND of Bruce Springsteen in concert
the FEEL of fluffy towels fresh from the dryer

HATE:
the SIGHT of seeing how young kids dress and act like they're so old. They're young. They need to stay kids.
the SMELL of cigeratte and cigar smoke.
the TASTE of tuna fish
the SOUND of nails on a chalkboard
the FEEL of being cold

When Did Work Only Mean Physically in the Office

So now I'm told that my work must be done in the office and that I can't do anything when I'm not there. WTF??? So therefore, any work that I am doing off-site means nothing. So I guess the paychecks that some of my staff have gotten - they shouldn't have gotten? I can do their timesheets remotely the same as I can from the office. I can make phone calls remotely the same as I can from the office. What is going on here?

So now my boss is encouraging me to "purchase" up to 2 weeks of leave so that I am not negative. He's discounting any work that I did remotely. So I'll probably do that, but I'm documenting all of this. And when I leave, I'll be contacting the EEOC and filing a complaint. This is just completely wrong. He's violating FLSA. They could end up having larger problems because of the way they are doing this.

Another Week...

So this was a very relaxing weekend. Worked out, did some work on the yard, did some cleaning. Getting ready to scrap. One thing I didn't go - work! And it felt nice. Now I need to find the next part of my life and move that way. I don't want to be defined by work anymore. I'm going to sign up for a CEBS course and do that - that'll help me get back into the swing of things. And do more with CM. I enjoy that but for some reason I'm slacking there. And I don't want to do that. And maybe start writing my book. I could do that and HR consulting at the same time. So that's my goal.

Work Sucks!!

So I get back to work to find out all sorts of things are just a mess. But the biggest one is my boss and I are fighting over my leave. He is pissed off that I went on vacation since I "had all this time off this year so far." We had gone over my hours, and I showed him that I was keeping track because I wanted to make sure that I was keeping up with my work. I also told him that when I was in the office, I was working 12-14 hours every day, plus some weekends. Well, apparently that's not good enough for him. And he is violating FLSA because he is wanting to charge me for full days of leave even though I worked some of that time. Basically he said that my job required me to be in the office all the time and time that I worked while not in there wasn't going to count. During the course of our conversation, I told him that I was "sorry that my dad's death caused him and the company an inconvenience" and that "we promote a family-friendly business, but we don't adhere to that." He wasn't happy with those comments, but oh, well.

So I told him I wasn't happy with this outcome and that I wasn't going to work the hours I had been working anymore. I was only going to work my 8 hours, and that was it. No more weekends, either. He then said that he appreciated that I was very dedicated and always willing to help out and that I did work a lot of hours. Okay - where is the appreciation?? I haven't seen any of it at all.

So it's time for the job search. I met with one recruiter today, talked with another one, and have a phone interview next week with a consulting company. My goal is to be out of there by July. The consulting company looks good - they are the competitors with my last job, so they'd love to hire someone from a competitor. The only problem is that they don't start someone at 40 hours yet, but it might be nice to have some free time this summer. So that's what I'm hoping for.

Or maybe I just need to find a rich boy to marry, LOL!

I'm Back

I'm back home. I actually got back home on Tuesday, but spent Wednesday trying to get settled back into things. We had a great time. I'm glad we took the earlier flight on Thursday - the Bay Bridge was closed down for 6 hours, and if we left any later, we would have missed our plane. My niece was very surprised and excited to be going. She had no idea at all! We flew out of Baltimore, and by the time we got to All Star Music, it was about 10:30 p.m. - too late to go to Downtown Disney. So we just ate dinner at the resort and did some shopping there.

Friday we got up and went over to Magic Kingdom. The park was pretty empty for the first few hours, so we got on a bunch of the rides, including Big Thunder, which we went on 3 times before we actually had to get off of the ride! We hung out there for most of the day, then headed to Downtown Disney for some shopping, then over to Epcot. Unfortunately Test Track (or crash test dummies as we call the ride) was closed. But we got to ride Mission Space several times, and did the new Nemo ride over there.

Saturday we got up early and headed to MGM. The first ride - Tower of Terror (like it could be anything else!). We did that a few times, then rode Rock 'n Roller Coaster a few times, then back to ToT. Then we hit all of the other rides and shows except for The Little Mermaid (we ran out of time). We decided to do Fantasmic on Monday, during the late hours. We hit Tot and RnRC a few more times before the park closed. Total count that day - Tot - 13; RnRC - 5!

On Sunday we headed over to Epcot. Test Track was still closed, but we got a fast pass because they were expecting it to open at some point. We did Mission Space a few more times, rode Soarin', then went over to the World Pavilion part and walked through all of that. Then we went back to Mission Space and rode that again, and finally Test Track was open! The line wasn't too bad so we stood in line for it, then used our fast pass to go through it again. Then we headed over to Magic Kingdom and did more of the rides there and watched Wishes. I love seeing those fireworks! Around 11:00 we went on Splash Mountain and it got stuck twice, so we were on there for about 45 minutes. They did give us a free fast pass that is good at MK until August of 2007 (so when can I go back there to use it?!?). So we hit Pirates one last time before the park closed.

Monday was the long day. Animal Kingdom was open early, so we went there first and got a fast pass for Mt. Everest. However, the line was pretty short, so we rode that 5 times before deciding to do something else. We also were able to get a second fast pass for that ride. We did the safari ride, Dinosaur, some of the shows, and the rapids before heading back to Everest for 2 more rides. Then it was back to MGM. We went on more of the rides (ToT and RnRC among them) and saw The Little Mermaid and Fantasmic. The last ride we went on was Tower of Terror. We decided not to stay until they closed (1:00 a.m.) since we had to be at the shuttle at 3:45 a.m. for our ride home.

Total counts:
Pirates - 3
Big Thunder - 4
Mission Space - 4
Mount Everest - 6
Rock n Roller Coaster - 10
Tower of Terror - 18

Not too bad! I just finished downloading my photos - I only took about 500 of them. My niece brought her camera, but left it in the room the whole time! You should have seen me during the fireworks - I was taking pictures with both of my cameras, one after the other - pretty funny!

Of course, then it was back home and to the grindstone. But that's another post.

My Day In Court

Well, I'm back from CA, and I can't say it was a good visit. We got there Monday afternoon and spent a few hours with the attorney. He went over how we were supposed to answer questions, and stressed saying "Yes" or "No" instead of noncommittal answers. So we were good with that. Unfortunately my brother wasn't doing too well and has a kidney stone that hadn't passed yet. He took some drugs Monday night, but he couldn't take any Tuesday for the big day in court.

So Tuesday comes, and we're feeling pretty confident that things will finally start turning around for us. Nope. Nada. Zilch. No luck there. The judge decided to remove my brother as trustee and put in my uncle Jim. The same uncle whom my grandmother removed from the trust back in 2000. Because she didn't want him to manage her estate. Because she didn't trust him. But the judge decided he was the better choice for trustee. WHAT IN THE WORLD??? So apparently my grandmothers wishes don't matter. And it doesn't matter what is in the legal document - the judge can jus overturn it.

So we had to negotiate a settlement to have my brother resign. And he ended up losing about $20k in all of this. Excuse me - where is the justice here? Why was the good guy finishing last? And why do these greedy people still get what they wanted. So now my sister and I have to monitor my uncle to make sure he upholds the trust. There is enough cash in the estate to pay my brother's settlement. But there isn't enough to pay the 6 beneficiaries. So they will have to sell the contents of the house. But they will want to use that money to pay off their legal fees and get the house ready to sell. But they can't do that. They have to pay the 6 beneficiaries first. So now we'll have to keep an eye on this, and get the attorney's involved if my uncle does anything that violates the trust.

The sad part is that my brother had everything lined up to go. He had a buyer for the contents of the house. He had a person to fix the pool, someone to fix the gas leak, someone to paint the house. He could have had the house on the market within 2 months. But no, they had to go and tie this up in court for 2 years. UGH!

So we decided to blow off the other family (godparents, etc) and not drive up to LA to see them for dinner. Instead, we decided we needed to forget about everything and attempt to have some fun. So what did we do?? We spent 4 hours in Disneyland!! The only good part of the trip. And there were almost no lines, so we got to go on quite a few rides, and then spent more time shopping! Just what I need before my trip next week!
